Douglas Kay is an experienced trial attorney in both civil and criminal law matters. He has tried numerous cases before judges and juries in both state and federal court. He also has experience with various administrative hearings, and with alternative dispute resolution including arbitration and mediation. Mr. Kay also counsels clients involved in business disputes, in employment matters and in construction and government contract disputes.

He represents a wide variety of clients from individuals to publicly traded corporations and small businesses. His cases run the gamut of complexity from relatively simple breach of contract and employment litigation matters to the most complex commercial litigation cases involving allegations of business conspiracy, RICO, tortious interference with prospective economic advantage and misappropriation of trade secrets.

Mr. Kay is experienced in diagnosing and solving problems in their earliest stages and has a proven track record of avoiding costly and unnecessary litigation. However, Mr. Kay is calm and experienced when confronted with a matter that must be resolved in a court of law, administrative hearing or through alternative dispute resolution. He strives to reach the best result for his client's problems.

Mr. Kay understands the issues that clients face when confronted with employment, executive compensation and business disputes and when partners, stockholders and investors decide to part ways. He also is an accomplished criminal defense attorney who appreciates the concerns of his clients and has the skill and experience to navigate acceptable plea negotiations when appropriate, and, when plea negotiations fail, he has the ability to obtain the best possible result at trial.

Activities
Mr. Kay was born and raised in Fairfax, Virginia.  He attended public schools in Fairfax County.  Upon graduation in 1985, he attended college at Virginia Tech which included study abroad at Oxford University.  Mr. Kay attended law school at California Western School of Law in San Diego, California.  While in law school, he was commissioned an officer in the United States Navy.  Upon completion of law school in 1993, Mr. Kay served on active duty as a Judge Advocate.  He returned home to Fairfax at the end of his obligated active duty service in 1996 and accepted a position as an Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney for Fairfax County.  In 1999, he left that office and accepted a position at Venable LLP to pursue a career in commercial and employment litigation.  Mr. Kay joined Briglia Hundley Nuttall & Kay, P.C. as a partner in 2002.  He focuses on civil litigation.

Mr. Kay is active in the Fairfax Bar Association where he is vice chairman of the Legislative Affairs Committee and serves on the Judicial Screening Committee.

Mr. Kay is married to Christiane Kay.  They are raising their three sons in Arlington, Virginia.
